Oedipus plot, for example, is the end for which a tragedy exists (Aristotle 522). The plot of Oedipus possess certain magnitude or â€Å"seriousness† because of the violation of two general taboos. It possesses universal significance through the application of myths, the instability of one’s identity, the recognition of human condition and the role of fate. The sense of inevitability, alone, drives the plot. The complete flow also necessitates having a beginning, middle and end of equal importance to the plot in which â€Å"the sequence of events, according to the law of probability or necessity, will admit of a change from from good fortune to bad (Aristotle 523). There should be a sequence of piteous events to the end that are not episodic, but continuous. The beginning starts the chain of events that all together will lead to the climax and, th erefore, to the resolution and closure of the play. A tragedy must start with the incentive moment; in Oedipus it is the plague in Thebes. As the priest pleads to Oedipus, â€Å"Thebes is dying. A blight on the fresh crops and rich pastures, cattle sicken and die, and the women die in labor, children stillborn and the plague, the fiery god of fever hurls down on the city†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ( Sophocles 393). When Oedipus became aware of his citys alarming state, he sends Creon to consult the Oracle of Delphi. The Oracle replies that the murderer of Laius must be banished from Thebes: â€Å"Murder sets the plague-storm on the city† (Sophocles 395). The Oracle’s response is the second incident of the chain. Oedipus curses the murderer of Laius and commits himself to the mission of finding the assassin and banish him of the land, saying, â€Å"I’ll bring it all to light myself† (Sophocles 396). The fourth incident is the arrival of the blind prophet Tireseas to ac cuse Oedipus. This helps build the irony in the play, particularly because of its relation to the blindness that Oedipus both suffers now and will physically suffer later. It also leads to a quarrel between Creon and Oedipus, in which Oedipus flaws are revealed to the audience. When Jocasta intervenes and tells the story of Laius murder, she makes Oedipus suspicious by saying, â€Å"My god, my god-what have you planned to do to me?† (Sophocles, 412). The peripeteia, another important element of the plot according to Aristotle, is the sixth incident. This is the Messengers reversal of intention when he says, â€Å"Wonderful news-for the house, my lady and for your husband too (Sophocles 417). He helps reveal that Polybus and Merope were not Oedipus birth parents, saying â€Å"Polybus was nothing to you, that’s why, not in blood† (Sophocles 419). With this, he provides the crucial piece of information that will reveal that Oedipus is Jocasta’s son. As Aris totle suggests, â€Å"The best form of recognition is that which is accompanied by a reversal, as in example from Oedipus†(Aristotle 523). In the Oedipus plot, the Peripeteia is intrinsically connected to the Anagnorisis, for the Messenger’s reversal of intention and the Herdsman revelation build together the whole story of Oedipus, leading him to the recognition of his real identity. He says to him, with irony and anger: â€Å"Still t he king, the master of all things? No more: here your power ends. None of your power follows you through life† (Sophocles 433). Thus, the play does not revolve around Oedipus; instead, it pivots on the development of events that happens to him in the play. Character takes second place to plot. Nonetheless, Oedipus possesses the qualities of the perfect tragic hero, according to Aristotle’s view. He says of the protagonist, First, and most important, it must be good† (Aristotle 523). The character must not be too wicked, but not too good, either. Thus, Oedipus, with his qualities of leadership (shown by the people turning to him in time of plague) and wisdom (his ability to solve the Sphinxs riddle), follows Sophocles prescription. The audience must sympathize with him, but also notice that the he possesses a tragic flaw, â€Å"hamartia: his ego. He thinks he is superior to others, and wants to equal the gods. He says, â€Å"I am the land’s avenger by all rights. And Apollo’s champion too† (Sophocles 396) and â€Å"You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers† (Sophocles 398). This hubris, or exaggerated pride, results in his fatal retribution. The proof that he directs his own disgrace comes from his own words, as he exclaims, â€Å"But the hand that struck my eyes was mine- no one else-I did it all myself!† (Sophocles 428). However, what the audience feels throughout the play is that he falls from his high position not because of any fault or flaw, but because he could not escape his destiny. The inevitability of Oedipus fate evokes pity and fear among the audience. Although he may have flaws, the amount of suffering he faces seems undeserved. This remorse guides the audience to their â€Å"katharsis.Thus, Oedipus possess all the qualities of the perfect Aristotelian tragedy. It exemplifies magnitude and seriousness through the inclusion of significant affairs, illustrates a complete flow, and display s a complex plot, with all the necessary components therein. Sexism in the Catholic Church free essay sample

Since the beginning of history, sexism has always been a prominent barrier between sexes. The notion that women are not on the same level as men has always been in existence. Even in the church there are accusations of sexism. We see it during the book of exodus this belief stems from the creation of Eve, through a rib of Adam. From scripture, Eves roll was to be considered as a servant and a temptress, the sole reason why Adam ate the apple. Consequently Eve is blamed as being the reason mankind is not living in a paradise. This is why I chose to study sexism, it has always been a topic within the church that I have not fully understood. Sexism is defined as the discrimination or hatred against people based on their gender rather then their individual merits. We see examples of this in modern day such as; a girl cannot play on a football team because of her gender, and likewise a male cannot be on a cheerleading squad because of his gender. There are multiple organizations and associations that make this more aware to the and help bring recognition to these issues. However sexism has been around since the ancient years and it has roots. Sexism in its general usage is directed against females. In ancient Greece, going back over twenty-five hundred years ago, women were born as property that belong to their fathers. This ownership was given to the husband as the woman became older. Women were also judged to be not worthy of male accompaniment, in older days women would bring dowries to their husbands. These dowries were used as payment for marriage. They would consist of things like gold and livestock. This is a legitimate example of how many sexist laws, beliefs or teaching would have been rooted from ancient and cultural pasts and still carry and alter our opinions today. The Church has been criticized many times on acts of sexism. The number one, main reason, that people accuse the church of sexism is the rule that women can not become priests. (Russell, 3) Or in that manner anything higher than a nun. People hear this and think well gee a guy can be a priest and a women can not this is a pure example of sexism. Dont we profess that God created men and women of equal worth and dignity? The Holy Scriptures state clearly in Galatians 3:28 that There is neither male nor female. In Christ Jesus you are one. ( Galatians 3:28) Catholic priests say that the call to be a priest is a gift and comes from God. How can mans call from God be real but a womens can not? (Hardon, 2028) However the Church addresses this with much confidence. The Catholic Church states that a priest must be male because a priest must represent Jesus, to stand in his place and since Jesus was male, so should the priest. â€Å"Barring women from being Catholic priests is not the result of sexism 2,000 years ago, its because women cannot fulfill a basic function of the priesthood, standing in the place of Jesus,†. ( Rogers, 1) Father Stephen Wang defends the Church by stating â€Å" This teaching is not at all a judgment on womens abilities or rights. It says something about the specific role of the priest in Catholic understanding which is to represent Jesus, to stand in his place† (Rogers, 2) Another key point brought up is that Jesus ordained the first priests, the apostles, they were all men, he must have intended for this. (Smith. 3) It is easy for people to over look the details and to see the broad side of things, assuming the church is being sexist towards females wishing to become priests. However to obtain the most authentic connection to god we can achieve the Catholic Church believes that only Males should be priests, to stand in his place. The Roman Catholic Church sees sexism as a social sin. There are many examples of the Church making statements about the importance of women in the church: Pope Benedict XVI stated â€Å"The history of Christianity would have had a very different development if it had not been for the generous support of many women who played an effective and precious role in spreading the Gospel. Their witness cannot be forgotten. † (Allen,1). Pope John Paul II also states â€Å"The Church desires to contribute to upholding the dignity, role and rights of women. Thank you, every woman, for the simple fact of being a woman! Through the insight which is so much a part of your womanhood you enrich the worlds understanding and help to make human relations more honest and authentic. (Howards, 3) The Catholic Church shows much importance for women. They state that each of the two sexes is an image of the power of God, with equal personal dignity though in different ways. A symbol of women of the Catholic Church is Mary. This symbol should speak for itself. Mary mother of Jesus Christ who we often pray to shows importance of women in the Catholic Church. Its easy to look at some of the Church’s policies and instantly assume that they are sexist in one way or another. However through deeper meaning we can see that the church is just trying to be as authentic and honest as possible. I believe that the Catholic Church is not at all sexist and are just trying to preserve their tradition and be authentic as possible. I don’t see the church bashing women claiming that they are not good enough to be a priest but rather they are just not fit for it, just as a man is not fit to give birth to a child. It was at first a little surprising that women have no chance what so ever of becoming a priest. However after deeper viewing I know understand the reasons behind it and completely agree with the Churches policy. What I found in my research I believe to be true, it came from many valid sources including the pope himself. My research definitely enhanced my faith. I know see how priest are meant to stand in place of Jesus and that only men are priest to keep the mass as authentic and honest as possible. There were not many other instances of the Church being accused of sexism to wright about, I wish I could have found more instances to study. However its good that the Church has not been accused of Sexism often. In Conclusion Sexism has been around for ages, it stems from ancient times and it is still seen in society today. The Catholic Church is often accused of sexism based of the policy that only men can be priests, however Jesus chose all men to be ordained as the first priests of his time, the apostles, and men are used as priest to be the closest resemblance to Jesus and to stand in his place during our sacred ceremonies. I conclude that the Church is not at all sexist and preach often about their importance of women, they are only trying to achieve the most pure authentic representation of Jesus as possible. They do this using a man.

The Scarlet Letter Essays - English-language Films, Free Essays The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, delivers a powerful novel invoked with symbolism. Centered on Hester, a woman branded with a scarlet A as a mark for adultery, much of the Scarlet Letters symbolism grows from the cruel, and shameful letter. The A symbolizes the walking emblem of shame. (Hawthorne 6). Throughout the novel, the brand of disgust evolves around the characters influenced by Hester, including her illegitimate child Pearl. Even Pearl is subject to the shame her mother has bore, and is also shunned from the strict Puritan society. The close of the novel reveals that the symbol has given Hester strength to redeem her sin, rather then brake her spirits. The adulterous mark is almost replaced by the community as able due to Hesters deeds to the community. Scarlet Letter also uses nature's flowers as a way to symbolize growth in the novel. The opening chapter describes a rosebush growing by the prison. It shows how even a beautiful flower like the rose can be judged as sacrificial, with its petals near the jail. This relates to Hester, as her beautiful character is judged by sin, not by actions. Later in the novel, Chillingworth, Hesters husband, expresses to let the black flower blossom as it may. (Hawthorne 14). This reoccurrence of the flower shows how Chillingworth accepts his tortuous soul. The flower's bloom is a direct symbol for the growth of character in Scarlet Letter. Clothing is a final source Hawthorne uses to symbolize. In chapter 7, Pearl is dressed in a red gown, with gold trim. The dress of Pearl is almost identical to the brand Hester must endure, with her scarlet brand. Chillington is dressed in black, which gives an insight into his sinister character, as revealed in chapter 14. Also, the use of bright color, like red, and gold expresses how different Hester and Pearl are viewed by the Puritan society, which mainly dresses in plain, emotionless colors. The brand of sin is reflected in all the aspects of Hesters life, which show how clothing in Scarlet Letter drastically reflects situation, and character. Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter gives a tremendous impression on the reader, filled with oppression, and historical opinion of the Puritans. Unfortunately, as the novel appears to mirror reality, situations in the storyline leave the reader skeptical about the actual ability to perform these actions. Hesters sudden removal of the scarlet brand bestowed upon her seems very unrealistic, considering it took seven years to remove it so quickly, and carefree. It almost makes the symbol of the scarlet letter obsolete at the end of the chapter 18, leaving insinuation that the letter did not have as much influence as formerly expressed. The Scarlet Letter also confuses the reader during chapters after 20. The final pages of the novel give a completely different perspective. Generally focused on the main characters, during chapter 21, and 22, the market gives a more broad insight into the community. While it makes for interesting reading, the sudden change of perspective leaves the reader strayed from the main characters, like Hester, and Pearl. The Scarlet Letter is a very intriguing novel, for anyone looking to find a tale of Puritan life, and the harsh reality of the times. Overall, the Scarlet Letter delivers an exciting, and interesting view for all readers.

Capital punishment, better known as the death penalty, has been around for centuries. Like all elements of modern society, the death penalty has evolved over the course of many years. Initially, the death penalty was administered by a royal court or monarchy through brutal stoning. Since then, the guillotine, noose, electric chair, and [currently] lethal injection have all been tools created to administer the death penalty here in the United States. Before the act of actually ending the criminal’s life is performed he or she waits on death row during the course of any court proceedings. In America, death row is the term given to the section of a prison reserved for inmates awaiting trial concerning the death penalty. The term â€Å"death row† is figurative. Due to extensive court proceedings, individuals on death row may await trial or sentencing for months or years. There is no way to determine how long an inmate will stay on death row. However, research has shown that extensive periods of time on death row lowers inmates’ mental capacities and capabilities, and deteriorates their physical health at alarming rates. Inmates on death row have no one to comfort them, to care for them, or to visit them. Jack Alderman is the longest serving death row American prisoner with over thirty-three years prior to his execution. In the state of Georgia on September 16, 2008 Alderman was executed by lethal injection. He was convicted for his part in the murder of his wife Barbara Alderman. Diabetes Type 1: Stem Cell Research

Stem cell therapy involves the direct transplant of islet cells to potential areas in the pancreas that have the ability to store and facilitate the differentiation of beta cells in the body. Such treatment is currently under progressive study in terms of its effectiveness and the possibility of fortifying the islet transplant’s resistance to autoimmune attacks antibodies. We discuss the actual procedures and different alternatives of stem cell therapy for DMT1 patients. The discussion covers the potential problems being confronted by such treatment, such as stem cell scarcity, autoimmune attacks against the islet transplants, etc.Lastly, discussion also covers the potential alternatives of the treatment, specifically (1) human embryonic stem cells, (2) cultured stem cells and (3) potential xenogeneic resources. However, various studies are currently being explored in order to obtain potential alternatives, such as xenogeneic stem cell resources, embryonic or progenitor alternatives, etc.Furthermore, we discover different methodologies in stem cell culturing and preparation techniques that confront the immunity problems most especially in post-transplant phase. These include the usage of different immuno-suppressing drugs, such as gastrin, etc. 2. Introduction 1. 1 . DMT1’s beta cell destruction does not only consider the neg ative effects towards insulin production. Deficiency in insulin can directly lead to moderate to severe hyperglycemia that can further trigger problems, especially in (1) neural systems, (2) peripheral and central vascular regions, (3) cardiac and (4) kidney areas. Vascular complications among DMT1 are associated to different cellular dysfunctions, such as Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPC) that induce metabolic stress and vascular angiogenicity especially when the cells are decreased.The primary principle that explains the metabolic and cardiovascular dangers of this illness is the increased of tonicity in the blood or also known as fluid hypertonicity. Due to the increased surge of blood glucose levels, fluids, such as blood, lymph, interstitial fluid, etc. , become thicker than its normal viscosity. For example, due to the hyperglycemic state of the body, the satiety centers of the brain triggers polydipsia in order for the body to increase its fluid intake aiming to dilute the tonicity or increased blood glucose levels. In the process, the body increases the fluid contents in the blood increasing as well the kidney workload in processing urinary output; therefore, producing polyuria.Consequently, fluid loss also causes significant electrolyte losses and glucose malabsorption that trigger body weakness. In order to compensate, the body triggers polyphagia that aims to increase food consumption. Causes of DMT1 DMT1 has three poten tial origins that are currently under extensive study, namely (1) chronic autoimmune destruction of beta cells, (2) environmental destruction of beta cells that is commonly viral in nature, and (3) genetic abnormality in beta cells and/or insulin receptors .The autoimmune etiology of DMT1, as discussed earlier, involves the activity of interleukin-1 protein cytokine that principally triggers the immunologic response of CD4+ T cells against beta cells. The autoimmune nature has proven the relationship between beta cell destruction and islets’ inflammation due to interleukin invasion; however, studies have not yet determined the principal source of this cytokine production . Therapy for DMT1 Stem cell transplant of islets of langerhans, specifically the ß -cells, is now considered as alternative treatment in tr eating Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 (DMT1); although, not all DMT1 patients are applicable candidates of stem cell therapy. Antigenicity testing and severity of DMT1 manifestations as well as autoimmune response to the treatment are usually evaluated before considering stem cell transplant.Through the process of genetic engineering, the autoimmune response of DMT1 towards the islet cells can now be countered by replacing the cellular necrosis of ß-cells. Surprisingly, the same test subjects have maintained their insulin independenc e until 33  ± 6 month span. Furthermore, the findings have observed that patients are able to maintain their graft function while under the immunosuppressing infusions.According to the results, 8 out of 14 patients have suffered chronic partial graft losses that are likely immunological in nature considering that 5 of these already received supplemental infusions. Pig islets are considered the best option available for xenogeneic transplants.According to Rother and Harlan (2004), such potential alternative are now being studied for different considered potentials, such as: Pig islets have been considered as potential source of islet stem cells aside from human source (a) The fact that humans had been treated with pig insulin for more than 60 years (b) Favorable husbandry — in that the species has large litters with offspring that attain adult size rapidly and with relatively robust islet numbers (c) The fact that pig islets respond to glucose in the same physiological glucose range as human islets (d) Existence of suitable societal-cultural relationship between the speciesDespite of the potential capacity of pig islets in acting as alternative stem cell resource, studies (Hering, Wijkstrom and Graham et al. , 2006; Rood, Buhler and Bottino, 2006) have identified its increased immuno-response towards CTL and autoimmune attacks initiated by DMT1 disease. Autoimmune attacks are the principal conflict considered in the process of islet transplantation wherein even if the graft has been successfully implanted, the risk of failure in the procedure is still considered possible considering the effects of autoimmunity triggered by increased antigenicity in the graft transplant.In one study, acute rejection caused the death of two macaque samples through cellular rejection mediated by CD4+ and CD*+ T cells and macrophages . In order to increase the effectiveness of xenografts after post-transplant phase, different culture infusions have been studied to prolong the life of pig islets xenografts. CD4 antibodies are usually being activated upon detecting significant system foreign antigens, which are usually introduced by bacteria, virus or any material that enters the body systems.In this principle, researchers (Kirchhof, Shibata and Wikkstrom et al. 004) have pointed their assumptions in the possible presence of antigens within xenotransplanted islet grafts. Miyagawa and T. Omori et al. , 2004) have focused in determining the potential drug enhancers that can improve transplant antigenicity, especially among xenogeneic sources. First, with the infusion of islets from N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-III (GnT-III) transgenic pigs, pig islet’s xenoantigenicity have significantly declined prolonging the survival of islets for the next five days of culture study. In another study, pig islets subjected for xenotransplantation are tested with alginate encapsulation.The transplant to tested in a primate, specifically a monkey-Cynomolgus maccacus . Adult pig islets encapsulated in alginate under optimal conditions (n=7) or not (n=5) are transplanted under the kidney capsule of the non-diabetic primate sample. Conclusion DMT1 is a condition manifested by increased and frequent manifestations of hyperglycemia caused by the insufficient production or depleted insulin levels. The most universally recognized cause of beta cell destruction is the autoimmune etiology caused by CD4 interleukins, and other associate antibodies.The aims of the therapy are the induction of cellular differentiation while facilitating as well the renewal of the existing and pre-existing beta cells in the islet graft transplant or in the remaining original islets. According to the approximated statistics, only 750 cased of DMT1 have successfully obtained the stem cell transplant of islet cells considering the billions of other DMT1 patients existing.In order to resolve such scarcity, various forms of stem cell resources have been proposed and are currently under extensive studies, specifically (1) human embryonic stem cel ls, (2) cultured islet stem cells, and (3) xenogeneic sources specifically the pig islet stem cells.
